More than 200 students from various parts of the Philippines, mostly in Metro Manila, joined the event and gained insights into possible career opportunities beyond traditional professions. New Swiss study on ticks finds nearly all carry pathogens 18/11/2023 BY  LE NEWS   LEAVE A COMMENT A recently published study shows 84% of ticks collected in urban areas and 77% of those in rural areas in Switzerland contained at least one non-viral pathogen in addition to a number of viruses. Almost every tick has the potential to make you sick, said Cornel Fraefel, a virologist from the University of Zurich who was involved in the study. Photo by Erik Karits on Pexels.com Researchers collected and tested a total of 10,286 ticks from rural and urban areas in ten Swiss cantons in 2021 and 2022. The most common bacteria found were from the Rickettsia group. These pathogens can cause a whole range of diseases that can cause fever, chills and headaches and were found in 70.8% of the ticks. Borrelia, which is responsible for Lyme disease, was found in many ticks. In urban areas, 8.2% contained the disease and in rural areas 1.9% did. Cross-border shopping – Swiss government intends to cut tax free allowance 18/11/2023 BY  LE NEWS   LEAVE A COMMENT This week, the newspaper Tages-Anzeiger reported that Switzerland's federal government is working on reducing the tax free allowance granted to people returning home from a shopping trip abroad. The amount is currently CHF 300 per person per day. The government is looking at cutting this allowance to CHF 150 per person per day, according to the newspaper. Within the current CHF 300 allowance are quantity limits on alcohol and tobacco that qualify for tax free treatment.   According to a study by the University of St. Gallen cross-border shopping diverted CHF 8.5 billion away from Swiss retailers last year, down from CHF 9.1 billion in 2017.
